"The Ranch on the Pecos River," written in free verse, talks of the beauty of a harsh, near-desert land and tells the story of a sturdy West Texas sheep and goat ranching family. The poems are a series of vignettes of the lives of my grandmother and parents; life on a ranch during the depression years; my grandmother's struggle to keep the ranch after my grandfather's early and unexpected death; and the family feud over who would inherit the ranch. Located 30 miles from Ozona, the entrance to the ranch, still owned by the heirs, lies at the base of Fort Lancaster Hill, across the highway from Fort Lancaster, now a Texas State Park.

Sue is a poet and writer, now residing in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but she is originally from Texas. She is also a friend of mine and writes poems about everything that she experiences that touches her heart. She also has a very bright, funny, engaging personality, and this comes out in her writing in the way that she paints words and images about subjects dear to her heart.
This book is written about her visits to her grandparents' ranch in Ozona, Texas. Her reflections about her early and adolescent life while visiting this ranch are poignant, especially in the chapters that deal with animals and nature. I had more than a few laughs and many tears of joy AND sorrow while I was reading this book.
Her West Texas descriptions are now part of a dying era, in which many people lived off of the land, and their ranches were their fortresses and arenas for raising the younger generations in a family.
This is an especially good book to learn about the historical background of a slice of West Texas ranch life during and after WWII from someone who is now an internationally-acclaimed poet and world-traveler.

The Ranch on the Pecos River Sue Littleton 9781461098294 Books Reviews
This little book of blank verse depicts vividly the joys, sorrows, and life in general during the years following the Great Depression in West Texas. The author is a cousin of my husband and a personal friend so, of course, I have some built in knowledge of the subject matter. Sue Littleton is reliving childhood and family memories, which are controversial within the Ingham clan to this day; no two family members have exactly the same memories of events! Life was hard on that ranch during the past century and remains so to this day, either with too much water or no water and lots of rattlesnakes and cacti. Having said that, the land produces great sheep, goats and cattle. For anyone interested in life on a West Texas ranch, it will be an enjoyable read. Now, that land is also dotted with gas wells and a wind power transmission line. The ranch has not had an Ingham giving it loving care for quite some time, thus the headquarters has fallen into disrepair. A part of it is on the market by some of the heirs.
